The Symptoms of Heart Disease in Women

About two thirds of women who die sudden deaths due to Heart Disease (compared with about half of men who die of Heart Disease) have no previous symptoms of disease and this is why prevention is so important in women.

The diagnosis of Heart Disease in women is generally more challenging for clinicians because women present differently from men. Chest pain is the most common first manifestation of heart disease in women. Similarly to men, nearly 90% of women with heart attacks complain of chest pain. Women are significantly more likely than men to have upper abdominal pain, dyspnea (shortness of breath), nausea, and fatigue - these are not the typical symptoms of angina.
